of apple and education…

so apple released a gorgeous new imac today, 20″ and 24″ models, super thin, stylish aluminum and glass case, impressive specs, super-thin keyboard, and at the same price as before.

bravo.

they also unveiled ilife ‘08 and iwork ‘08, both of which suites i purchased in their previous incarnation (ilife ‘06 and iwork ‘06) and was prepared to do again today, until i noticed that apple increased their educational pricing from the previous $49 rate (which was available the day both suites were released in january 2006) which was a $30 discount from the retail cost of $79 to an insulting $71, only an $8 discount from retail. In addition, they completely eliminated the educational pricing from all ipods last year, and today they eliminated the educational pricing on apple keyboards and mice.

you’re really a “class act” aren’t you apple?

apple, you really don’t like students anymore do you?

as soon as it became “cool to use a mac” on college campuses, you decided it was “cool to fuck your educational customers as hard as possible.”

and steve jobs, you say that bill gates and microsoft have no class? look in the mirror, that’s somebody without class.

thanks apple…

i almost wish microsoft would get their act together, then i’d be tempted to switch back to windows, at least their discounts for students, educators and non-profit organizations are still respectable.

ihate… i mean, iphone

i think the iphone is single handedly making me dislike apple all over again.

i think this stems from my not understanding the ipod craze. while i have an ipod nano, it hasn’t been used in at least 6 months.

according to steve jobs when he unveiled the iphone at macworld 2007 this past january, its, “…three things: a widescreen iPod with touch controls; a revolutionary mobile phone; and a breakthrough Internet communications device…”

since the “internet device” part of the iphone is thus far a joke, with severely crippled email functionality, no over the air syncing (of anything), and a “desktop web experience” thats less capable than the browser in modern s60 phones, i think its more or less just another web enabled phone, albeit prettier than most. it is however a far cry from being a “breakthrough internet communications device”

onto the revolutionary mobile phone part. this one truly baffles me and i still have a hard time getting my head around the claim that a device without a todo list, or notes that sync back to a computer, or basic suport for mms or video recording, or more than 3-way conference calling (my n73 supports 6-way) or adjustable camera settings, or third party software is in anyway a “revolutionary mobile phone.” Perhaps they should have said “revolutionary new user interface, mediocre functionality”

the only real claim that apple got right is that it is a widescreen video ipod with touch controls. granted, at only a 1.5:1 screen ratio its closer to the old 4:3 ratio of broadcast tv of yore and its really not all that widescreen. as an example, even 16:9 content (which would be 1.78:1) will still be presented letterboxed with black bars above and below the picture, lets not talk about how bad a 2.35:1 motion picture will look if its not been cropped.

so it seems that the iphone is really just the merging of an ipod and a cellphone, and sadly its not even a really good phone, again lacking a lot of the functionality of modern smartphones.

that having been said, i was very disappointed when apple announced that their next operating system update (10.5 aka leopard) was delayed until october 2007 (pushed back from the initial spring 2007 schedule) so as to divert resources to “finish” the iphone on time.

but clearly the iphone isn’t finished by any stretch of the imagination, so i must wonder how often in the future apple is going to divert resources from their computer divisions in order to update their new “jesusphone” as the web has started to term it.

from here, all i can say is that i hope adobe updates lightroom, and does it fast, so that i can use it in place of aperture in case i ever decide to move back to a windows based machine. at the rate apple is going, with their lack of innovation in their computer hardware (their newest 15.4″ laptop is still only 1440×900 pixels, while 15″ laptops with wuxga [1920x1200 pixels, fully capable of playing 1080p hd content] screens have been available since 2003 from companies like Dell and Compaq) and the constant delays in their operating system updates (not to mention the lack of a new version of ilife multimedia software or iwork office software for 18 months) and the fact that i can clearly see beyond the steve jobs “reality distortion field” and i don’t know how much longer i’ll be an apple user.

lustful thoughts…

while i don’t in fact find myself in love with the iphone (i’m still waiting for gen2)

i do find myself lusting over the new 17″ macbook pro, so much so that i think it will be replacing my 2 year old 12″ powerbook G4 when i go away to school.

My (prospective) configuration:

17″ apple MacBook Pro
2.4ghz intel core 2 duo processor
4GB of ram (though i intend to purchase the ram separately as apple marks it up 100%)
250gb 4200 RPM hard drive
upgrade to the High-Definition screen (matte not glossy), 1920×1200 pixels, HD video here I come!!!!

surgery…

and thus shall begin some major computer surgery…

upgrading my hard drive from 80gb to 160gb, and replacing the optical drive (single-layer dvd burner with a dual-layer dvd burner)

sadly, apple’s attentiveness when it comes to design makes these operations a royal pain.

apple, whatever will we do with you?

so apple started the whole “macworld” thing today up in san francisco, and good ‘ol steve jobs unveiled two “stupendously-fantastically-spectacularly-amazingly-incredible” products (please, please realize that i’m being sarcastic) the apple-tv and the iphone.

apple-tv, uhm, er, what the hell are we going to do with you? i’m sorry, i just don’t get it, it doesn’t make much sense… its not quite a tivo, not a contender for windows media center since its not a full computer, its kind of like the abomination that is the windows media center extender class of devices, which for the most part, failed at market.

and iphone, wow! honestly an amazing take on integrating an ipod and a smartphone, and i think it will be the beginning of a new line of products for apple, and i can’t wait for version 2! however the touch interface leaves a lot to be desired, because you have to be looking that the screen whenever you want to do something (no drive-by-feel controls) and lest not forget that they are partnering exclusively with cingular (now a part of at&t) who are notorious for spying on their customers which would seem to radically contradict apple’s previous stance that privacy, security, and choice were both fundamental and foundational to their consumer experience.

way to go apple…

and to top off the day, we get a new wireless router (which slipped through most of the tech news sites until just now thanks to all the iphone frenzy) that is really just apple playing catch-up to the rest of the industry who’ve all had draft-n wireless networking products on the market for 6 months.

ugh, and of course stevey-boy declines to offer any new details about the forthcoming mac osx 10.5 (leopard) operating system upgrade do later this spring, or the partnering ilife 07 and iwork 07 software packages (which i was personally hoping would be on-sale today, allowing me to finally completely rid myself of microsoft office)

again, truly remarkable day apple… i hope you’ve got something stupendously-fantastically-spectacularly-amazingly-incredible” up your sleeves for later this spring, otherwise you won’t be seeing anymore of my money until 2008.
